There are three types of Home Page Special Themes. One type includes stars by their country/state of origin. The star images displayed on there are the regular thumbnail images.
A second type shows specially-selected images based on the theme of the day. Those images are unique to the day and are only displayed on the star profile page if viewed from a link on the Special Themes page.
The third type displays stars that were active during a specific range of years. The year is directly tied to an event or annivesary happening now.
